Calories: Unless you are obese and not sedentary, a low calorie diet of 1,200 calories a day may provide enough nutrients and be low enough in calories so that you will lose weight. But if you are sedentary your weight loss on 1,200 calories will be much slower. Physical activity burns calories and helps maintain muscle tissue as you reduce fat. You do need some calories to maintain your body's basic metabolic rate and its resting metabolic rate which burns calories while you rest.
